Local Competitor Judged Top Barista in Northern Heat (24/02/2012)

LOCAL COMPETITOR JUDGED TOP BARISTA IN NORTHERN HEAT

In a closely fought contest, judges at the Northern heat of the 2012 UK Barista Championships (UKBC),  announced Gordon Howell of The Attic (at Harlequin Coffee and Tea House) York as the Northern Barista Champion on Friday 17th February. Gordon was followed closely by Stuart Archer of Pumphrey’s Coffee House in Blaydon who finished second and Steven Dyson of Spring Espresso in third place. Both runners up still have a chance of making it to the London semi-finals in April should they be among the top 20 scoring baristas from across the country.

The baristas had 15 minutes to impress a team of judges by serving up espressos, cappuccinos and their own signature espresso. The winner of the Best Espresso went to Gordon, but unlike previous competitors he was not able to sweep the board as Jo Meagher beat him to win the Best Cappuccino award and Best Signature Drink went to Tom Booth.

Gordon used Has Bean’s “Jailbreak” coffee for all three drink categories. Commenting on his signature drink Gordon said; “I deconstructed the blend to highlight each coffee’s characteristics by preparing the coffees individually as a pourover or aeropress. I wanted to give the judges a totally sensory experience with aromas and taste coming together right at the end by folding the ingredients into the espresso.”

Second placed Stuart Lee Archer was enthused by the day’s events, commenting; “What a great day! Fantastic coffee, people everywhere you looked. Once again I’ve made friends, become better at what I do and had a brilliant time doing it. I can’t wait for the next one…hopefully the Semi Finals. Fingers crossed!”

Kenneth Cooper, SCAE UK Co-ordinator said; “I would like to congratulate all the competitors on their performances at the heat. Once again we have seen a hugely successful UKBC heat which could not have happened without the support of all our sponsors, not to mention the huge amount of work put in by our host, Pumphrey’s Coffee. I would like to thank everybody who took part in these heats and look forward to the Midlands heat which will be hosted by Mad About Coffee in Norwich on Saturday 3rd March, coinciding with the Norfolk Coffee Festival.”

Stuart Lee Archer at Pumphrey’s Coffee expressed their delight at being able to host the heat saying; “What an opportunity to enhance our developing barista community and a great chance to work with our customers and staff to push quality through the roof. Thank you to everyone who made the North of England UKBC heat such a success. We can’t wait to have the opportunity to host in the future and continue to develop our little part of the speciality coffee community.”

The Scottish heat, hosted by Matthew Algie, will take place on Friday 16th March at Glasgow Caledonian University, and following calls for more competitors to enter the Northern Ireland heat on Tuesday 20th March, this event has now been confirmed, however there is still room for more baristas to participate.

The current leader for the Best Newcomer to the UKBC competition is Dan Fellows. Union Hand-Roasted Coffee has introduced an Origin Trip prize which will be given to a working barista who is new to the competition and has scored the highest points after the regional heats.  The winner could see themselves heading off to a producing country such as Rwanda, Brazil, Guatemala, Costa Rica or El Salvador. They will meet farmers who supply Union and see first-hand a working coffee farm and perhaps even help with a coffee harvest.

The top scoring baristas from the UKBC heats will go through to the finals, which will be held at The London Coffee Festival between 27th and 29th April 2012, and one of them will be crowned UK Barista Champion 2012 and go on to compete in the World Barista Championship in Vienna, Austria on 12th-15th June.

London Coffee Festival - First Music Acts Announced! (23/02/2012)

This year, the Hyde Park zone of the festival will play host to some of the best acoustics talent the London music scene has to offer - here’s the first instalment of the exciting acts secured for this year’s event!
Headlining the festival over all three days will be Mobo Award winner and UK Coffee Week ambassador JOHN ADELEYE, in his second appearance at The London Coffee Festival.
Adeleye continues as a solo artist writing his own material starting 2001. His first important break came when one of his own compositions entitled "Soul Glo" earned him in 2003 the UK MOBO competition award in the London venue Sound. As a result, he was signed by record company Universal-Island and artist management company
Joining us will also be RICHARD JAMES, a singer/song writer from Devon UK currently based in south west London. Whilst studying Pop and Jazz Richard James has been writing, performing and producing his own material. Richard soon discovered that his original sound was enjoyed by audiences up and down the country from the depths of Devon and Cornwall to packed clubs in London.
Creating a sound that is uniquely his own, Richard James says he draws inspiration from all music! “Sometimes I’ll hear a song that has a great melody, other times the lyrics will speak out to me. All music can be influential, I just sift through it until I’m inspired”

Another eagerly awaited artist joining us at the London Coffee Festival is South East London singer/songwriter SHERRY DAVIS who is getting ready to drop her debut single ‘Aint That Love’ – a classic soul song with timeless appeal. Blending retro soul influences like Stevie Wonder and Diana Ross with modern artists such as Alicia Keys and Corrine Bailey Rae Sherry Davis has established herself as a stand-out performer on the UK live music scene, playing piano and singing with her band in well known venues across London.

UK Barista Championship 2012 update! South West Champion announced... (13/02/2012)

Dale Harris from Has Bean Coffee, was crowned South West Barista Champion on Thursday 9th February 2012, in the search for the UK’s top barista. Held at The West Country Catering Exhibition organised by Expowest , the second of the six regional heats has raised the benchmark for the 2012 UK Barista Championships even further, with baristas from the region competing against each other to make the finest coffees. Dale took his turn in the first day of the heats, and as well as being awarded overall regional winner, also collected the prizes for Best Espresso, Best Cappuccino and Best Signature Drink.

Dale, who travels across the country training baristas in how to get the best out of their coffee, was followed closely by Maxwell Colonna-Dashwood of Colonna and Smalls in Bath, and Dave Jones of Origin Coffee Roasters in south Cornwall.  All three contestants were required to make four espressos, four cappuccinos and four espresso-based non-alcoholic signature drinks. These drinks were marked by two technical and four sensory judges who assessed the knowledge of the entrants as well as their attention to detail and creativity of their signature drink.

Winner, Dale Harris comments: “I was delighted to win the South West heat where I was competing against some of the best baristas in the country. I kept the same theme running throughout my presentation, using two types of single varietal coffee from Finca Santuario in Cauca, Colombia. I wanted to inspire the judges with my signature drink which, when tasted with ice, brought a delicate tomato acidity to the fore. I train baristas from all over the UK, and I believe the UKBC is a great opportunity for baristas to showcase and develop their skills further.”

Kenneth Cooper, SCAE UK Co-ordinator commented “I would like to congratulate the baristas who entered the South West heats as they all demonstrated an extremely high degree of skill. Dale’s performance was outstanding in all three coffee categories where his creativity and eye for detail shone through.

The top scoring baristas from the heats will go through to the finals, which will be held at The London Coffee Festival between 27th and 29th April 2012, and one of them will be crowned UK Barista Champion 2012 and go on to compete in the World Barista Championship in Vienna, Austria on 12th-15th June.
