The Rise of Löfbergs: From Challenger to Major Player

The Rise of Löfbergs: From Challenger to Major Player

Over the years, the UK coffee scene has welcomed a wide range of roasters, each bringing their own approach to craft, culture and quality. Among them, Löfbergs have stood out for the scale and speed of their growth, as well as the strength of the values that underpin their business. Their journey from a long‑established Swedish roastery to a major player in the UK market is a story that deserves attention, and one that continues to gather momentum.

A family-owned Swedish roaster with more than a century of heritage, Löfbergs has quietly but confidently transformed from a challenger brand into one of the fastest-scaling coffee businesses in the UK. When they first entered the market in 2016, they were roasting just 150 tonnes for UK customers. By 2026, that figure is projected to reach 2,500 tonnes - a fifteenfold increase in just ten years! And with a target of 5,000 tonnes by 2030, their ambition is only accelerating.

A Swedish Coffee Philosophy That Sets Them Apart

To understand Löfbergs’ rise, you must understand where they come from. Karlstad, Sweden, isn’t just their hometown, it’s a place where coffee culture is woven into daily life. Sweden consistently ranks among the world’s highest coffee-consuming nations, and that heritage shapes Löfbergs’ entire approach.

Their philosophy blends Scandinavian sustainability leadership with precision roasting and clean, balanced flavour profiles. As a family-owned business, they take a long-term, values-led approach to growth, prioritising quality, responsibility, and relationships over shortcuts or quick wins. It’s a mindset that resonates strongly with their UK partners and consumers alike.

Scale That Surprises, Quality That Doesn’t

Across Europe, Löfbergs roast more than 30,000 tonnes of coffee annually, supported by a state-of-the-art roastery in Sweden that opened in 2021, alongside additional facilities in Latvia and Denmark. This network allows them to do something few roasters can: deliver specialty-level quality at commercial scale, with a five-day turnaround from roast to UK delivery.

This combination of craft and capability has been a major driver of their UK success. When Löfbergs shifted from an equipment-led model to a coffee-first strategy - leaning into their own roasting expertise rather than relying on third-party supply - everything changed! Consistency improved, speed increased, and the brand’s reputation grew rapidly across foodservice, retail and private label.

Sustainability at a Scale That Matters

Sustainability isn’t a marketing slogan for Löfbergs, it’s a defining principle. They are one of the largest importers of Fairtrade Organic coffee in the world and maintain direct relationships with more than 40,000 farmers across 60 regions. Their leadership in blockchain-powered traceability through Era of We, along with pioneering work in regenerative organic coffee, sets them apart in an industry where accountability is increasingly important.

Their sustainability credentials are backed by tangible action: fossil fuel-free shipping, renewable energy roasting, fully recyclable packaging, and a five day roast-to-delivery model that reduces waste and emissions. It’s sustainability not just at scale, but with integrity.

A Breakout Success in the UK

Today, Löfbergs supply a broad mix of UK customers, from high-street coffee chains and hotels to contract caterers, restaurant groups, and petrol forecourts. Their partnerships with leading equipment brands such as La Marzocco, Eversys, Mahlkönig and Marco further strengthen their position as a trusted, quality-led supplier in the UK.

Their UK headquarters and showroom in Shoreditch (a stone throws away from The Truman Brewery), has become a hub for collaboration, training and innovation. With a state-of-the-art coffee lab at its heart, the space brings partners closer to the product and the brand’s Scandinavian roots.

Though Löfbergs’ retail journey is one of the most impressive parts of their UK story. Entering the grocery market in 2023 with a single trial listing, they are now stocked in Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Morrisons, Asda, and Co-op. In just two years, they’ve become one of the fastest-growing coffee brands in UK retail, driven by word of mouth, strong consumer reviews and standout products.

Their Brazil Single Origin has become a Great Taste Award winner and the single largest contributor to beans category growth over the past two years, while their Colombia Single Origin earned a 2 Star Great Taste Award in 2025. With significant marketing investment now underway, awareness of the brand is set to grow even further.

The reasons behind Löfbergs’ momentum are clear: consistent, high-quality coffee at scale; fast and reliable supply; sustainability credentials that stand up to scrutiny; and flexibility across channels and formats. All of this is backed by a family-owned business with long-term ambition - a combination that resonates strongly with partners looking for stability and integrity in a fast-changing market.

Looking Ahead

With a target of 5,000 tonnes in the UK by 2030, continued investment in sustainable sourcing and supply chain innovation, and expansion across both retail and foodservice, Löfbergs are poised for even greater impact. And who knows…perhaps one day, a UK-based roastery could be part of the story?
